The Promise
Who has not known…the defeat of expectations, the delay of answered prayer, the dark times when the heart gives in to doubting and despair…Times when disappointment nags us and discouragement sets in, when our thoughts are dominated by the things that might have been.
We expect life to be fair, and when it’s not, we blame the One who gave us everlasting life by giving us His Son. Somehow we’ve missed the truth that God and life are not the same---when life is hard, we seem to think the Lord should get the blame.
We accuse our suffering Saviour of wrongs this world inflicts; we indict the Man of sorrows for Satan’s evil tricks. Yet belonging to the God of Love is not a guarantee of life without affliction or a world that’s trouble-free.
Our peace would be a feeble thing if we could bear no pain; if our hope were based on happiness, our faith would be in vain. Lord, help us understand that, through Your promises are true, You never pledged an easy life to those who walk with You.
Help us to remember we must always count the cost, that being Your disciples will eventually mean a cross. The only promise we can cling to when the storms of life assail is that You’ll go through them with us---and Your love will still prevail...
